Rain, Rain, Go Away! I Have Things I Want To Do!

Wow, what a crazy past couple of days. Obviously, I'm writing this right now, so I'm not out in the field. They decided to cancel our trip due to weather this year, which has never been done before. Had we had the ranger boat instead of having to take planes, this never would have happened. Higher-ups in the USFS who made this decision, you're not making me happy right now. In something like 112 years, the USFS has never NOT had a ranger boat and in 20-something years this trip has never been canceled. Needless to say, I'm totally disappointed, as this is one of the highlights of my year.

So yesterday we all went out to Ward Lake to do check out some sites that have been known about, but not looked at yet, so we mapped those after having a nice lunch of some of the food we would have eaten in the field. Here's a few pictures from yesterday, but you can find the rest of them here.

Those last little guys many people have not seen, but they're fiddleheads and they're delicious! I squealed when I saw how many of them there were in the area we were in! I picked a bunch and want to go back in the next few days so I can can some. (My first canning experience, as per my "Things I Want To Do" list on the left side of the blog! ;o)

In consolation our class decided to have a dinner together last night, which was hilariously awesome and totally delicious. We feasted on venison curry and some salmon spread with three types of salmon in it.

We eat well here!

So today I will be going to the university to do some mapping stuff for a few hours and then I'm on my own. I will probably end up working at the shop for a few hours, but I also need to go grocery shopping, so I may end up doing that first while I'm still in town. But I could also go work first and then go grocery shopping so that I have something to do tonight. There is not a whole lot to do here at this house I'm staying at.

Did I mention that I can't use my laptop and I'm on a borrowed one? There is no wifi here at the house I'm staying at, only an ethernet cord, so I had to order a doodad (after trying to buy it from three places in town before I gave up) to connect the ethernet in the house to the USB port on my laptop. Steve had one to let me borrow until mine gets here, but it still doesn't work on my computer, for some reason! Totally frustrating!! He then let me borrow his MacBook, which is totally nice of him, but I'm really hoping to be able to use my own computer out here, because that means I could watch Netflix and, you know, use my own computer! So right now if I wanted to use my laptop I have to either go into town and pay to use it somewhere (Annabelle's is where I will usually end up, I'm sure, although I haven't had to go this route yet) or use a friend's wifi (thank you, Jessica!).

So that's where I'm at now in life! Every day this week is kind of up in the air now that we are having to figure out where on the island we can go for archy stuff. I'll end up at the coffee shop to relieve Steve in the afternoons, most likely.

That's all I got for now! Check back tomorrow for awesome pictures from my ferry trip up here! (Sneak peek.) I even wrote a whole blog post while I was off the grid. 36 hours is a long amount of time to be on a ferry. ;o)

P.S. Yesterday I signed up for a Full Circle Farms subscription. Organic veggies every week! Yes! I will still get my daily dose of kale!

P.P.S. I got to see my cat friends, Mojo and Icky, on Monday!!

Let this be the beginning of Icky Stalk 2011!

  1. I'm so sorry to hear about the cancelled trip. Those fiddleheads look amazing, though!

  2. Seriously. Bummer about the trip! I really miss the abundance of fiddlheads, they're harder to get around here and the season is pretty much gone*. Your pics constantly make me miss Alaska. Your feast sounds pretty great!
*If you've still got a good patch of fiddleheads I would be so happy to pay for some!
