Vancouver Party: March 2011!

Well, we've been home for almost an hour now and have settled in from our long drive a little bit. It takes about 5.5 hours of straight driving between Vancouver and Portland, but always a little bit more if there are stops. (There are usually a couple stops.) This was such an awesome weekend! I'm so glad that Jonathan got to come with me this time! Seeing Stina and Ben was absolutely wonderful! I'm really hoping to be able to make it up there more often because I have realized that visiting them is almost as good as being back in Alaska. Mountains surrounding me, float planes flying around, water with kayakers in it...yeah, it's pretty awesome. (Although...I was almost Canadian. The Alaskan Boundary Dispute of 1903, had it gone through in Canadian favor, would have made me from British Columbia. Our accents still betray us sometimes, though. ;o)

Here's a few of my favorite pictures from the Vancouver Aquarium, but you can see all of the pictures in this album here.

 Scarlet ibises

Hyacinth macaw

Toucan! I LOVED HIM!! So cute.

Up-close-and-personal moment with a young coho

This rockfish don't want me looking at his kelp

FACT: Rockfish are the coolest fish ever

 Jellies!

One of the dolphins!

What is super sad is that there are BELUGA WHALES at the Vancouver Aquarium and our camera battery died, so all I had was my Diana!!! I'll be getting those pictures back later this week, so cross your fingers that the pictures turned out! I was playing "my face is on your face!" with one of the belugas! (This is a game I play with Halo Cat. Basically it involves me putting my face on her face/head and exclaiming, "MY FACE IS ON YOUR FACE!" because she tries to give head butts, so I figure if she can do it, I can do it. I'm just bigger than her.) One of the belugas would swim up to the glass and slowly head butt it with its squishy forehead. It was soooooo cute!!

While I was at the aquarium I also got pooped on by a bird for the first time. But it was a tropical bird, so that means it was super lucky, right? (I am thinking so.) I think one of the scarlet ibises thought I was a target and pooped on me with a poo mixture of butterfly abdomens and fruit. Thanks, bird!

After the aquarium we went to Granville Island, where we did some shopping, had lunch, and had great beer from Granville Island Brewery. I got some super cute and locally-made arm warmers and a reversible dress from Dream and then some cute stuff to package my soap with when I sell it on Etsy (Nothing there yet, though!) from Paper-Ya!

My first washi tape...I am so happy!

For dinner we went to BierCraft, which was EXCELLENT. Jonathan and I shared three of the tapas plates, which was definitely enough food.

Prawns with Thai spicy sauce

Poutine! Made with miso gravy, so they were vegan. SO good. Highly recommended.

Seared ahi with greens and wasabi aioli.

Stina and Ben fed us too well while we were in Vancouver...but I am not complaining. ;o) I am already ready for my next trip to Canada!

Did everyone else have a great weekend? What did you do?

P.S. Tomorrow night we're going to see the Blazers beat the Wizards! (They will so win!)

  1. Glad you had a great weekend! I am going to have to show Hannah the picture of the Hyacinth Macaw! She knows quite a bit about "Scarlet Macaws" but we've never heard of the Hyacinth Macaw. Her favorite color is purple so I bet she'll go nuts over that bird! You got such GREAT pictures! Thanks for sharing!

  2. Ooh, I can send you other pictures of the Hyacinth Macaw. It was gorgeous! It turns out there were two in the enclosure, but I don't think I got a picture of the two together. They were snuggling!

  3. Were the cheese curds on the poutine vegan too? If so, how'd they taste? I'm always so skeptical of fake cheese, but those look like they were good and melty!

My weekend was nothing exciting. Lots of homework, and lots more procrastinating. :-)
