My First Time at Water Kefir!

I have been intrigued by water kefir ever since first reading about it on Common Sense Homesteading (basically my life goal is to someday be as awesome as Laurie). I have been wanting to look more into fermented foods. I am not thrilled with kombucha (although I would like to try to make it myself someday because I think I may like it better then?) and I have seen containers of regular milk kefir in supermarkets for a long time now, but did not know about water kefir until finding her blog several months ago. Wanting to try water kefir has been in my mind for a bit now but it didn't really seem "attainable" until I started working at Mr. Green Beans and realized we sell quite a bit of products from Cultures For Health. We had *one* last packet of water kefir grains left and so last night I took that as my sign they should be mine!

Our box!

 What's inside the box

Water kefir grains! They look kinda like raw sugar chunks.

My initial jar to rehydrate the grains. Not shown, but I did put a clean chicken egg in the jar because the grains like the minerals and it helps them grow.

The little grains in the water. Go, grainies, go!

The grains will take a few days to rehydrate and then I'll put them in some different water with some lemon juice (because I want fizzy lemon-flavored kefir) and it'll take a few days for it to do its thing and then we can drink it! I hope it turns out!

In other exciting news, I am going to order some ginger beer grains because I freaking LOVE ginger beer and these grains will make the real thing. You get them from The Ginger Beer Plant. I can't wait!

  1. I bought water kefir grains a few weeks ago and have been trying my hand at it! So far, I really like making it with oranges. We need to share tips, cuz I feel like I'm not very good at it yet!

  2. Oh, that's awesome! You should be blogging about all of this, girl! ;o) I am going to make it tomorrow, I think, so we'll see how that goes. I need to check it and make sure it's on the right track.
